This newly released 2011 US National Survey on Drug Use and Health report includes statistics on tobacco use in the U.S. Findings show that 68.2 million Americans were current users of a tobacco product (26.5% of the total population). Of those, 56.8 million (22.1%) smoked cigarettes; 12.9 million (5.0%) smoked cigars; 8.2 million (3.2%) used smokeless tobacco; and 2.1 million (0.8%) smoked tobacco in pipes. The report also includes tobacco user statistics by the following demographics: gender, pregnant women, race/ethnicity, education, college students, employment, geographic area, association with illicit drug and alcohol use, and frequency of cigarette use.
