This CDC report reveals a 7% overall increase in the number of tobacco use incidents depicted per movie, from 13.1 in 2010 to 14.0 in 2011. The incidents varied by MPAA ratings: G and PG movies climbed 311% (0.8 to 3.2) and PG-13 movies climbed 9% (10.7 to 11.6). Overall, tobacco incidents per youth-rated movie (G, PG, and PG-13 combined) rose 34% (from 6.5 to 8.8). R-rated movies increased 7% (26.0 to 27.8).The authors recommend an implementation of policy requiring an R rating for any movie depicting tobacco use in film and certification that moviemakers do not receive payoffs for depicting tobacco use in film.
